In the final instalment of Club Oenologique’s Italy Report 2023 Sarah Heller MW presents her selection of 100 Amarone della Valpolicella
Our Amarone Gianni Pavesi 2017 is awarded with 95 points:
“It opens with a hint of cherry stone and pretty alpine strawberry fruit that plays hide-and-seek with vetiver, leather and dried orange peel. Sheer and bright with an acidic lift, the mid-palate’s perfectly preserved fruit is a testament to carefully managed, natural appassimento over a fairly brisk 90 days. This leaves a sense of ripeness without sweetness. The finish is very dry at 2g/litre of residual sugar. Cut crystal tannins frame the finish”.
